Composer Forecasting Project

Welcome to the Composer Forecasting Project! This is a crowd-sourced initiative to empower composers who are starting new projects to use Reference Class Forecasting to estimate the amount of time that writing will take. Using this data, a composer can ask something like (for example) “how long does it take other composers to write a 12-minute string quartet?”, arriving at an estimate for their own project based on a class of similar reference-points.

This survey is anonymous and takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. You will be asked a series of questions about a piece of music which you have written. You may fill out the survey again for as many pieces as you have composed – every entry helps composers like you draw from a larger pool of insight and experience from the new music community!

As the project gains responses, the data will be made available for free at this page for any composer that would like to use it!

Thank you for contributing to this initiative! If you have questions, please contact us at staplejammusic@gmail.com.

[Note: surveys provide valuable information at the risk of “flattening” the experiences of individuals. Please contact us if you feel that this survey can better reflect the beautiful diversity of experiences and musical practices in the new music community. We value your input.]
